UPDATE: 14-Year-Old Newark Boy Arrested After Crashing Stolen Car into Pole; Friend Critical

Newark Public Safety Director Brian O’Hara said at approximately 10:20 p.m. Thursday, police responded to the 500 block of S. 11th Street on a call that a vehicle had crashed into a utility pole.

According to officials, the driver, a 14-year-old male, and a male passenger were transported to University Hospital to treat their injuries.

Police confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Freehold.

The 14-year-old male was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property, assault by auto, and causing injury while driving unlicensed.

Police say his passenger, who had to be extracted from the vehicle by Newark firefighters, is reportedly in critical condition.

This incident remains under investigation.
