UPDATE: 1 Dead, 5 Injured in Raging Multi-Alarm House Fire in Paterson

Paterson Mayor Andre’ Sayegh has confirmed one fatality, five injured and two firefighters who suffered smoke inhalation in a raging fire that ignited inside a house in the city this afternoon.

According to a preliminary investigation, fire tore through the second floor of 187 North 1st Street at approximately 135 p.m. sending firefighters to the scene to investigate.

Upon arrival, they found intense flames tearing through the two and a half story wood-framed structure.

Several occupants reportedly jumped from the burning structure while firefighters forced entry into the home and rescued several residents.

Firefighters from Prospect Park assisted Paterson in the fire that was placed under control in about an hour.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
