University High School Victorious in North Jersey Group 1 Sectional Championship Basketball Game

Newark's University High School was crowned victorious in NJ State championship basketball competition Monday evening.

The third-seeded University High School Phoenix knocked off top-seeded Dunellen High School in the North Jersey Section 2, Group 1 tournament, 61-50 in front of a sold-out crowd down in Middlesex County.

NJSIAA officials reported University's Noah Mack dropping in 17 points, Spencer Joyner scoring 12 points and Justin Harcourt adding 11 to elevate the Phoneix team to its first NJ State Championship win since 2016.

NJ state sports officials said University will play Paterson Charter in the Group 1 semifinals on Wednesday at Bloomfield High School at 4 p.m.
