For more than a century and a half, the corner of Prince Street and Union Avenue in Elizabeth has echoed with hymns, fellowship, and community spirit.
On Sunday, September 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., First Baptist Church of Cranford/Elizabeth will honor that legacy with a Cornerstone Celebration at its historic home, 402 Union Avenue.
The milestone marks 155 years since the church’s cornerstone was laid in 1870, a moment even documented in The New York Times, and continues a tradition of faith and service that began when the congregation was established in 1843.
This year’s celebration will include a worship service with Guest Preacher Rev. Nicholas A. Johnson of First Baptist Peddie Memorial Church in Newark, who will deliver a message reflecting on the church’s past and offering hope for its future.
“We’re grateful that the Lord has placed us here on this corner in this corner of His Kingdom,” said Rev. Dr. Malachy M. Williams, Senior Pastor.
“This Cornerstone Celebration commemorates the faithful stewardship of those who laid our building’s cornerstone 155 years ago and honors God’s faithfulness in allowing us to still be here to share His Good News from this hallowed space.”
For generations, the church has been more than a place of worship; it has been a home of hospitality, outreach, and service, whether through neighborhood meals, community gatherings, or simply offering a space of welcome.

Following the service, guests are invited to enjoy light refreshments and meet members of the congregation to learn more about the church’s ongoing ministries.
The entire community is invited to take part in this milestone celebration.
