Two Shot with One Dead in Irvington Township

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation into a double shooting that left a man dead in Irvington Township on Sunday night.

According to police officials, at approximately 7:40 p.m, police responded to reports of shots fired near a gas station at the intersection of Lyons and Union avenues.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found an unconscious and unresponsive man in his 40's suffering bullet wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said a second man -in his 20's- suffered bullet wounds in his leg and arm.

Witnesses leaving a nearby liquor store said they heard a small commotion then saw two males exchange gunfire shortly before the suspect ran from the scene.

The motive for the deadly encounter is under investigation. No arrests were made.
