Two people were rushed to University Hospital after gunfire erupted in Newark’s West Ward early Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred at approximately 1:45 p.m. near South 9th Street and South Orange Avenue.
Responding officers found victims suffering from gunshot wounds and immediately called for medical assistance.
While canvassing the area, police pursued and detained one individual following a brief foot chase. Officials believe the person may be connected to the shooting.
The incident remains under active investigation, and additional details are expected to be released by Newark Police officials.
