Two Newark Police Officers Attacked, Injured by Crowd During Arrest Attempt

Police officials in Newark are investigating a violent assault on two officers in Newark Friday evening. AdThe NPD 5th Precinct units were hospitalized following an assault by a large crowd.

According to preliminary information, the officers were responding to a report of an individual allegedly armed with a handgun near 348 Clinton Avenue at approximately 7:44 p.m.

Upon arriving at the scene, police detained a male who matched the description provided in the report.

However, during the arrest, a large crowd formed and started physically attacking the officers.

Reports say the situation escalated quickly, requiring additional backup units to intervene and restore order.

Three individuals from the crowd were arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer.AdDuring the melee, one officer sustained a fractured nose, while the other officer suffered from swelling and bruising on the face.

There were no reports of weapons located at the scene and both injured officers recieved medical treatment and are expected to recover.

The incident is still under active investigation as officials work to determine the full scope of the events that led to the assault.
