Two Newark men who were in possession of loaded weapons was taken into custody yesterday in separate incidents.
Moises Martinez, 20, was arrested at approximately 10:30 a.m., after police investigated suspicious activity amongst a group of men gathered on the corner of Thomas Street and Austin Street.
During the investigation, Martinez was observed by police approaching several vehicles and taking money from the drivers and walking into a backyard to remove clear plastic bags from underneath a vehicle.
Martinez was taken into custody. Police seized a glass vial containing cocaine, a loaded .380-caliber handgun and the plastic bag with vials of the drug, according to police.
Martinez was charged with numerous drug and weapons offenses.
At approximately 11:30 p.m., detectives arrested Vonte R. Ford, 19, who was also armed, according to police.
The detectives watched a group of men gather in front of an abandoned home on Kent Street. Then observed a man, later identified as Ford, notice the police presence while removing what appeared as a gun at the time.
Ford was place under arrest. He was in possession of a loaded .40-caliber handgun, according to police.
Ford was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon.
