Two men were killed in a violent crash Wednesday evening after a box truck veered off Interstate 78 and plunged from an overpass in Newark, according to preliminary information released by authorities.

The incident occurred around 6:27 p.m. on April 1 along I-78 East near milepost 56.6 in the local lanes.

State police said an Isuzu box truck, operated by Chad Hill, 35, of Edison, was traveling eastbound when it veered off the roadway to the right for reasons that remain under investigation.

The truck struck a concrete barrier, continued forward, then collided with a light pole before overturning.

Authorities said the vehicle ultimately left the roadway and fell from the I-78 overpass, landing in a dirt area below.

Hill was ejected during the crash.

He and a 46-year-old male passenger from Brooklyn, New York, both sustained fatal injuries at the scene. The passenger’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.

The crash remains an active and ongoing investigation.
