Two Gunpoint Carjackings Within Minutes Apart Reported in Newark’s South Ward

Newark

Police in Newark are on the search for suspects wanted for a double carjacking at gunpoint this evening in Newark’s South Ward.

In the first carjacking, two armed men targeted the victim who was occupying a van in the area of Branford Street and Frelinghuysen Avenue at approximately 6:10 p.m.

Police said the suspects stormed the victim’s vehicle with guns pointed and demanded access to the two-tone beige and blue Chevy conversion van with Cadillac Escalade rims. The van has N.J. license plate numbers “C83-LSS”

Police say the suspects took control of the van and sped from the scene. The vehicle was last observed going northbound on Elizabeth Avenue from Branford Street.

According to police, the suspects have only been described as two black males, with one wearing a black hoodie short dreads and the other wore a green hoodie.

In another incident, police say a distraught female victim entered the police station reporting that she was carjacked at gunpoint on Frelinghuysen Avenue at around 6 p.m.

The woman told police that while driving in the vicinity of 198 Frelinghuysen Avenue, two cars forced her black Ford Fusion off the road. The Ford Fusion has a license plate number W66-JWL.

The victim said the suspects boxed her car in then exited their vehicle armed with guns.

The men forced the woman out of her car and sped away.

In a bizarre and bold twist to this incident, the suspects drove the Ford Fusion onto the Green Street side of City Hall and tossed the woman’s phone out of the car near the courthouse.

There were no physical injuries reported.
