Two Arrested in Newark Police Pursuit Ending in Crash on NJ-21

Newark

A portion of NJ-21 in Newark was temporarily closed to traffic as police investigated a pursuit that ended in a crash in the city’s North Ward Thursday night.

The high-speed pursuit began when officers attempted to pull over the driver of a grey BMW wanted for eluding officers earlier in the evening.

When police tried to pull the car over near 4th Street and Park Avenue, the driver ignored officers' lights and siren then sped away.

Police say the pursuit touched off in several North Ward communities before reaching McCarter Highway, where the suspects' car lost a tire and began to lead police driving on its rim at around 60 mph.

According to police, the suspects crashed on McCarter Highway near Grafton Avenue, where police apprehended two assailants without further incident.

Police reported non-life threatening injuries at the scene, but no officers were hurt.
