Two Arrested for Gun Possession in Newark

Newark

Police in Newark are reporting the arrest of Anthony E. Lewis, 31, and DeShawn L. Mitchell, 29, both of Newark, for the unlawful possession of handguns in an incident that occurred Saturday, November 10th, 2018.

Police say they acted on information obtained through the city’s anonymous tip line where officers responded to the area of Christie and Hawkins streets on a call of a man with a gun.

Upon arrival, and based on the full description provided by the tipster, officers stopped Lewis. A search of Lewis revealed that he had no weapon on him according to police.

Police say on the scene, officers were given further information that Lewis had given the weapon to another male who had put the weapon in a vehicle parked near the location.

Officers approached the vehicle, which was discovered wanted for a felony in a nearby town. As they peered in the vehicle, they observed a gun just beneath the passenger seat according to police.

Officers later found another gun, a .380 revolver, in the glove box of the vehicle while searching for the vehicle’s ownership papers.

Both men were arrested and charged with two counts each of unlawful possession of handguns.

These charges are merely accusations.

The suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
