Two Arrested for Alleged Murder of Newark Man

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose announced today that Lenwood Thompson, 39, and Chance Venable, 47, both of Newark have been arrested and charged with the murder of Denzel N. Uwubiti, 29, also of Newark.

Authorities say Uwubiti was murdered on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017.

Newark Police were called to a shooting in progress around 2:40 a.m. in the 100 block of North 5th Street.

Upon their arrival, officers found Uwubiti unresponsive in a car. EMS transported him to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:11 a.m. authorities said.

Today, Sgt. Christopher Smith of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and members of the FBI Fugitive Task Force...took Thompson and Chance into custody.

Authorities charged both men with Thompson and murder, conspiracy to commit murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Thompson was also charged with aggravated arson authorities say.

Both men are currently being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.
