Two-Alarm Fire Destroys House in Newark's South Ward

In Newark, firefighters battled a raging two-alarm house fire in a section of the city's South Ward Sunday. 

The early morning fire broke out at 934 South 20th street around 1:12 a.m. 

According to officials, firefighters raced to the scene after receiving reports of a fire with possible trapped occupants. Upon their arrival, fire personnel found heavy flames engulfing the first floor of a three-story wood-framed house and rapidly extending to the second floor. 

Firefighters stretched multiple lines and began to beat down intensive flames, where they eventually made entry into the home to check for trapped and/or injured occupants. 

There were no serious injuries reported and firefighters were able to get the fire under control in un a half house with the cause under investigation. 

Five families which involved 16 residents, were relocated.  

1,000
