Trio Charged in Separate Newark Robberies

Authorities in Newark announced today’s arrest of three residents who the Police Division’s Major Crimes Bureau sought for two separate robberies.

In a statement released this evening by Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose, Mr. Taquin Burgess, 19, was wanted for a robbery that took place on Sunday, October 29th shortly after 1 a.m.

Director Ambrose said two female victims were walking near the intersection of Broadway and Elwood Avenue when a male suspect exited a black jeep and demanded then took their purses at gunpoint before fleeing.

Detectives developed sufficient evidence to identify Burgess as a suspect in the robbery and secured an arrest warrant for Robbery, Conspiracy to Commit Robbery, Possession of a Weapon, Receiving Stolen Property, and Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purposes charges.

Director Ambrose said today at 10:45 a.m., members of the Police Division’s Fugitive Apprehension Team, The FBI Violent Crimes Task Force and the NJ State Parole Board arrested Burgess, who they said attempted to flee from a residence in the 400 block of 19th Avenue as law enforcement officers arrived.

In the other incident, officials said on Saturday, November 25th at approximately 9:30 p.m., an 18-year-old male reported to police that he was robbed and assaulted at gunpoint by Mr. Sean Williams, 25, and Ms. Ajah Sumpter, 20, near the intersection of Bergen Street and Hawthorne Avenue.

Police said nothing was taken during the robbery and the victim did not seek medical attention for his injuries.

Members of the Police Division’s Fugitive Apprehension Team located and arrested Williams and Sumpter without incident this morning (Thursday) at an apartment in the 200 block of Irvine Turner Blvd.

Authorities charged the pair with Robbery and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery with Williams facing the additional charges of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purposes.

These charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
