A routine traffic stop in Newark's East Ward had cops involved in a foot pursuit that ultimately ended in officers recovering a gun from the suspect.
Police attempting to pull over a vehicle wanted for traffic violations on the 500 block of South Street near Dawson Street at around 5:15 p.m. on Monday evening had the driver bail from the vehicle, initiating a foot pursuit in the East Ward Community according to reports.
With several officers heavy in pursuit, and backup assistance traveling to the area, cops were able to apprehend the suspect - Darphon Corprew,23 - about a block away.
Police reportedly confiscated a loaded weapon from the suspect.
There were no injuries immediately reported.
Corprew was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and various other weapons offenses. He was also found to have an open warrant for unspecified previous crimes.
