Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest of Armed Irvington Man in Newark

Newark

An Irvington suspect was arrested on weapons charges on Sunday night by Essex County sheriff’s officers following a motor vehicle stop.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that officers from his department’s Patrol Division were conducting routine quality of life operations in the vicinity of Weequahic Park Sunday night when they observed a 2005 gold-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee speeding in the southbound lanes of Elizabeth Avenue.

The suspect vehicle was pulled over at the intersection of Watson Avenue and Hunterdon Street.

“The suspect, Chalo Roberts, 43, of Irvington, initially presented our officers a fraudulent driver’s license,” Sheriff Fontoura noted. “When he reached into the glove box for the car’s registration and insurance papers our officers immediately spotted a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun and placed him under arrest.”

The Glock Model 30 was found to be fully loaded.

Roberts was charged with the unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, providing false information to law enforcement officers and possession of a fraudulent driver’s license.

Roberts was additionally issued motor vehicle summonses for careless driving, obscure license plates and driving without a license.

Newark municipal court Judge Marvin Adams set bail on Roberts at $75,000 cash bond only and ordered him held at the Essex County jail.

Roberts will be arraigned on the charges later this week.
