A string of three separate shootings within 24 hours in Newark has left one man dead, another victim fighting for their life, and gunfire rattling a community already on edge.

In the first deadly encounter, according to information sent by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the violence began in Newark’s West Ward, where residents in the Vailsburg section told RLS Media they reported to police repeated bursts of gunfire early Friday, September 26.
At approximately 2:36 a.m., Newark Police were dispatched after a ShotSpotter alert in the area of Halsted Street and Norwood Place.
When officers arrived, they discovered a man inside a Honda Fit in front of 74 Smith Street.
The victim, identified as 23-year-old Mr. Jeramahia Bascal of Newark, had been shot in the head.
Bascal was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 5:00 a.m.
