Three Arrested for 2017 Murder of Newark Man

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose announced today that three suspects have been arrested and charged in connection with the November 2017 murder of Shakeem Bernard.

According to a statement rewased by authorities, Bernard , 27, of Newark was shot on Nov. 17, 2017 near 34 Evergreen Avenue in Newark.

Authorities say Bernard was pronounced dead a short time later at University Hospital.

The suspects fled the scene but were subsequently involved in a motor vehicle collision in the vicinity of Irvine Turner Boulevard and West Bigelow Street in Newark.

Police arrested Mr. Ali Berger, 27, of Newark and Mr. Daquan Berger, 24, of Newark and charged them with conspiracy, murder and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Police say Ms. Wajeirah Wilson, 24, also of Newark, was charged with conspiracy and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

These are accusations.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
