Three-Alarm Fire Destroys Grocery Store, Apartments in Elizabeth

Fire officials in Elizabeth are investigating a fire that tore through a building that housed a grocery store overnight in the city.

The three-alarm fire ignited in the mixed occupancy building located at 208 Broad Street before 11:30 pm sending firefighters to the scene where they observed heavy fire coming from a second-floor apartment at the A&M Grocery Store.

Crews began to immediately evacuate several occupants in apartments on the upper floors of the store before knocking down flames that engulfed much of the building.

Firefighters gained control of the fire shortly before 12:30 am while EMS treating two adults and two children with minor injuries according to preliminary reports.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
