Thieves Steal Mail From Postal Truck in Newark, Lead Police on Pursuit

An attempt to steal loads of mail from a postal truck in Newark ended in a pursuit that involved a Union County town this afternoon.

Witnesses contacted police when they believed they observed several suspects robbing a mail person inside the postal truck on Bergen Street and Grumman Avenue just before 1 p.m.

According to authorities, police officers arrived at the scene and found mail bins on the ground but after an investigation, they confirmed that the suspects smashed the window of the truck then tossed several bags of mail in a waiting getaway vehicle.

Police officials broadcasted a description of the vehicle to neighboring towns then Newark officers located the vehicle occupied by three males and a female on Elizabeth Avenue.

Officers attempted to pull the driver over but the suspect sped away, leading police to Frelinghuysen Avenue then Haynes Avenue according to reports.

Police in Elizabeth picked up the pursuit when the driver sped southbound on route 1&9 then exited at the Elizabeth-Newark border where they lost the vehicle somewhere near Elizabeth Avenue.

There were no injuries reported.

**UPDATE 2:52 p.m.:** One adult and two juveniles arrested on Pioneer Street.
