Kearny Police are searching for a suspect who stole a vehicle from a local Wawa early Sunday morning before abandoning it in Newark’s North Ward.

Police were called to the Wawa on Harrison Avenue around 7 a.m. after reports that a vehicle had been stolen from the parking lot.

Investigators learned the vehicle had been left running with the keys inside, making it an easy target for a thief.

Using the vehicle’s GPS tracking system, officers were able to trace its movements into Newark.

The car was eventually located abandoned and unoccupied near the intersection of Oriental Street and Passaic Street.

Police are continuing to warn residents never to leave their vehicles running or unattended with the keys inside, as it creates an opportunity for theft.

The suspect is described as a Black male wearing a construction-style safety vest. The incident remains under active investigation.
