Taxi Driver Beaten, Carjacked in Newark’s East Ward

Police in Newark are on the search for a suspect who beat a female taxi operator carjack her in Newark's East Ward Friday afternoon.

Authorities are calling it a strong-armed carjacking that occurred at around 1:40 p.m. in the 60's block of Nichols Street where police responded to reports of a carjacking in progress.

According to police, a female owner/driver of the taxi was reportedly cleaning the backseat of the vehicle when she was attacked from behind then shoved into the car.

Police say the unidentified suspect then immediately jumped into the front seat and sped off.

The victim managed to fall out of the back door to the ground while the car was in motion as she narrowly escaped being kidnapped.

Police say it's unclear if the suspect took the keys or if the car was left running by the victim.

The victim was unable to give a clear description of the attacker according to police.

The Newark Police are actively investigating the incident as they searched for the gold 2011 4-door Lincoln taxi. The vehicle has a NJ license plate number OT-96A. Police say numbers 8003178 is written on the trunk of the car.
