Authorities have recovered the body of a swimmer who disappeared beneath the surface of a quarry in Buena Vista Township during a rescue operation over the holiday weekend.

According to emergency responders, crews were dispatched at approximately 5:41 p.m. on July 5 to the Collings Lakes quarry near 644 Cains Mill Road after reports that a swimmer had gone underwater and failed to resurface.
Firefighters from Buena Vista Township, along with New Jersey State Police troopers, immediately entered the water in an attempt to locate the victim.
Multiple specialized dive teams, including units from Malaga, Bellmawr, and Atlantic County, were called in to assist with the extensive search.
Rescue crews continued searching the water until the operation was suspended due to darkness and lightning moving into the area.
The victim was recovered on July 6. Authorities have not yet released the individual’s identity.
Following the incident, emergency responders extended their condolences to the victim’s family and thanked the numerous agencies that participated in what they described as a complex and challenging rescue effort.
Officials are also using the tragedy to remind the public that swimming in quarries and so-called “blue holes” is extremely dangerous. While the water may appear calm and inviting, hidden hazards beneath the surface—including steep drop-offs, submerged debris, cold water, and poor visibility—can quickly turn deadly.
Authorities continue to urge residents to avoid swimming in abandoned quarries and other unauthorized bodies of water to help prevent future tragedies.
