Authorities are investigating an early-morning illegal drag racing incident that left a Newark police officer injured and resulted in the arrest of two drivers, according to a statement released by Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2025, officers on Empire Street near Frelinghuysen Avenue encountered a chaotic scene involving about 100 vehicles reportedly driving erratically during an illegal drag race.

During the response, one driver struck a police officer and was immediately taken into custody. Moments later, a second driver accelerated toward the injured officer, who narrowly avoided further harm by jumping out of the vehicle’s path.

Authorities said a pursuit was initiated, which ended in Hillside, New Jersey, where the second suspect was apprehended. Both drivers now face charges of aggravated assault on a police officer.

The injured officer was transported to the University Hospital for evaluation after complaining of pain. He is reported to be in stable condition.

The investigation remains active.
