Suspects Led Police on Pursuit After Firing Shots in Newark's South Ward Neighborhood

Police captured a suspect after a high-speed pursuit that began in a section of Newark's South Ward and ended near the Pulaski Skyway in the city's East Ward on Monday afternoon.

According to preliminary reports, multiple rounds of gunfire rang out from a vehicle in the vicinity of Frelinghuysen Avenue and Carrington Street just before 5 p.m.

While officers were arriving at the scene, they located a vehicle matching the description of the suspected car driving away from the scene.

Police attempted to pull the car over, but the suspect ignored lights and sirens then sped away.

According to reports, the suspects bailed from the vehicle in the area on Route 1&9 north near Doremus with officers engaged in a foot pursuit.

Officers captured one suspect, but after a search of the area, at least two others were last seen running on Euclid Avenue. It is not clear if police ever caught these suspects.

Police located shell casings at the Frelinghuysen Avenue shooting scene, but there were no injuries reported.

The incident remains under investigation.
