Suspected Driver in Fatal Lakewood Hit-and-Run Crash Arrested

Police arrested the man they say was the driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed the front seat passenger of a vehicle Sunday morning.

According to authorities, on Nov. 25th at approximately 7:20 am, officers responded to a motor vehicle crash in the area of West Countyline Road and Cedar Row.

Upon arrival, officers observed a 2019 Chevrolet Suburban with significant front end damage up against a tree along West Countyline Road.

Inside the Suburban, police found the front seat passenger, identified as Yechiel Yitzchak Finegold, 20, of Baltimore **-Image Depicted-**, with grave injuries. He was transported to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus, where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

The driver, identified as David Abayev, 21, of Lakewood, was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center for serious injuries and is listed in stable but critical condition.

Further investigation by the Lakewood Police Department Traffic Safety Unit, along with the Ocean County Prosecutors Office revealed that the Suburban had come in contact with a 2018 Nissan Sentra while traveling east on West Countyline Road. The Suburban then left the roadway and struck a tree. The operator of the Sentra, later identified as 28-year-old Mashon Wilson fled the scene. He and the vehicle were later located at his Lynn Court home.

As a result, Wilson was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Injuries, Operating a Motor Vehicle While Suspended and Hindering his Own Apprehension. He was later released on his own recognizance pending a court date.

The investigation currently ongoing and additional charges may be filed.
