A 45-year-old Newark man was taken into custody Sunday evening, following a police pursuit through Hillside and Newark.
According to police, Sunday at 7:12 p.m., police observed a Toyota Corolla - reportedly stolen out of the Evergreen Cemetery Friday - traveling west on Long Avenue.
Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over after confirming through Hillside Police Headquarters that the car was stolen; however, the driver disregarded the officer's signals to stop, and a pursuit ensued.
Officers pursued the vehicle through several streets in Hillside and Newark, until the suspect lost control of the stolen vehicle and struck a taxi.
The suspect - later identified as 45-year-old Caesar Alvarez, of Newark, - exited the stolen vehicle and ran from the crash scene. Alvarez was ultimately apprehended and placed under arrest by Lt. Cocuzza after a brief foot chase.
Hillside and Newark Police officers responded to the scene and tended to the taxi driver who was transported to an area hospital for a complaint of pain.
After further investigation by the Detective Bureau, police charged Alvarez with Theft, Aggravated Assault, and Resisting Arrest.
Police said he also had a warrant for $1000.00 out of Newark for unrelated drug charges.
