Suspect Arrested in Connection with Jersey City Sexual Assault

A late-night sexual assault on Sussex Street in Jersey City last month has led to the arrest of a local man, according to information released by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2025, Jersey City police responded to a report of an assault. 

 

Officers found a woman who said she had been physically and sexually attacked by an unknown man as she entered a residence. 

 

The victim was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where she was treated for her injuries.

 

Following an investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, authorities arrested 35-year-old Richard Murphy of Jersey City on Friday, August 8, 2025. Murphy faces charges of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree burglary, and third-degree aggravated assault. 

 

He was taken into custody at Jersey City Medical Center and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.
 

Acting Prosecutor Mello credited the Special Victims Unit with the investigation and arrest, with assistance from the Hudson County Regional S.W.A.T. team and the Jersey City Police Department.
