Sunday Deep Freeze: Dangerous Wind Chills Continue Across North Jersey

Newark

By: Richard L. Smith

It is disgustingly cold across Newark and North Jersey region this morning, with temperatures sitting at 9 degrees and believe it or not, that’s the good part.

The bad part is the wind, which is making it feel closer to minus 7 outside.

Good morning and welcome to Sunday.

If you’re heading out for Sunday morning worship or early errands, you’ll need all the warm weather gear you can find. We’re locked into a deep freeze, and unfortunately, it looks like we’ll be in it for a while with no real end in sight.

One silver lining in this forecast is that the powerful storm forecasters once feared would slam our area has shifted out to sea.

That system could have dumped as much as four feet of snow on top of what’s already frozen and unable to melt from the last storm, so that is certainly good news.

The downside, however, is that spending more than just a few minutes outdoors puts you at risk for frostbite due to these treacherous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered flurries are possible before 7 a.m., followed by partly sunny skies with a high near 24 degrees.

Wind chill values will range between minus 5 and 5, with north winds between 15 and 18 mph and gusts reaching up to 30 mph.

Tonight, conditions will remain cold and partly cloudy, with lows around 11 degrees.

Wind chill values will range from zero to 10, with northwest winds between 8 and 13 mph.

Enjoy your Sunday, New Jersey — and most importantly, stay warm.
