Students Dismissed Early after Suspicious Odor at Newark Ironbound Elementary School

Newark

A suspicious odor that lingered around a Newark Ironbound Elementary School for at least two days forced officials in Newark to cancel school activities for half of today.

Emergency responders and PSE&G utility workers were called to the Wilson Avenue School today after administrators noticed an odor in the building that began sometime on Thursday.

According to reports, parents were notified by phone overnight and informed that students would be dismissed from the school at 1 p.m. today as a precaution when some children reportedly felt nauseous parents said.

School officials did not return a request for information, but according to Newark Public Safety officials, the odor was gas, and the school is expected to be fully functional by Monday morning.

There were no serious injuries reported.
