Student Attacks Teacher at West Caldwell School

Police in the West Essex County town of West Caldwell are looking into the motive behind a student-led attack that left a teacher injured on Wednesday.

According to a statement released by West Caldwell Police, at approximately 11:04 a.m., officers were dispatched to Essex Valley School, located at 1 Henderson Drive on a report that a student assaulted a member of the teaching staff.

Police say upon their arrival, an investigation at the scene revealed that a 13-year-old female student, from Flanders, went on the attack and struck a teacher multiple times.

According to West Caldwell Police, the student them injured two additional staff members who intervened in the assault.

Police say the staff member that was initially assaulted was transported to Mountainside Hospital for treatment for her injuries and expected to make a full recovery.

The Essex Valley School is a comprehensive, therapeutic, alternative school for students, grades, 5-12 who have been diagnosed with behavior disorders according to published information.

Authorities placed the unidentified juvenile under arrest and transported her to the West Caldwell Police Department.

Police say they charged the juvenile with three counts of aggravated assault. The girl was lodged in the Essex County Juvenile Detention Facility in Newark.
