Strong Winds Destroy School's Roof in Harrison

Harrison Town

The Towns of Harrison's Emergency Responders taped off an area around a school after strong winds caused damage to the roof of the building in the town during the overnight hours.

According to preliminary reports, the incident happened before 3:30 a.m. at the former Holy Cross School building where Harrison Firefighters arrived to find large debris lying on the ground in front of the building with other material flying from the roof; ultimately landing at the soccer field across the street.

Police closed off Frank E. Rogers Boulevard at Jersey Street due to safety concerns, but there were no injuries reported.

According to officials, besides some occasional events held in the school, the building is unoccupied and has no staff and students scheduled.

The roof is about 150’x50,’ and the wind is to blame for rubber roof and insulation board being blown apart. Officials say the rear gutter was hanging over the front of the building upon emergency responder's arrival.

If you plan to travel in the area during the morning rush, expect some heavy delays and congestion while crews remove the debris and check for safety concerns.

The structural integrity of the school is under investigation by city officials.
