The Cicely Tyson High School of Performing and Fine Arts in East Orange has much to celebrate after the school's Symphonic Band and Jazz Band earned top awards at the World Strides Festival in Hampton, Virginia this past weekend.
Led by my former colleague and friend, longtime Band Director Dr. Oscar Petty Jr., the students demonstrated their skill and dedication, continuing the proud tradition of artistic excellence that defines Cicely Tyson’s performing arts program.
Their achievements highlight the importance the school — and the broader East Orange community — places on fostering talent and opportunity for its young artists.
The Symphonic Band received a silver medal for its classical performance and interpretation of challenging repertoire.

The Jazz Band took home a gold medal, earning a superior rating for its dynamic and polished performance.
Adding to the celebration, saxophonist Lameel Cummings Jr. received the Maestro Award for his standout solo of Bobby Timmons’ *Moanin’*.
The bands also received the Spirit Award, recognizing the students’ commitment to their craft and their pride in representing East Orange.

This journey was made possible with the strong support of Principal John English, parents, and local community organizations who helped ensure the students could participate.
The festival experience offered these East Orange artistic scholars more than competition; they attended clinics led by professional musicians and educators and had the chance to experience the vibrant local culture in historic Williamsburg.

While in Virginia, Dr. Petty also arranged a tour of Hampton University, one of the nation’s leading Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
“Hampton, rich in academic and artistic excellence, was the perfect place to engage the minds of our students," said Dr. Petty.
“It was important for them to see and experience the spirit of an institution that reflects their own potential."

With decades of experience, Dr. Petty has continued to elevate the Cicely Tyson music program to new heights. He strongly believes the arts play a vital role in education.
"The data shows the arts improve academic achievement across all subjects, not just in music," he said. "Every student deserves the opportunity to experience the arts as part of a complete education."
Looking ahead, the students are preparing for their next opportunity — the World Strides Heritage Festival in Chicago in 2026, where they also plan to visit the site of the Obama Presidential Library, currently under construction.
The success of Cicely Tyson’s students is a clear reminder that with support, vision, and dedication, the arts -my love- can continue to inspire and uplift not only a school but an entire community.
Excellent work, East Orange Cicely Tyson!
