Street Gang Member Convicted in Fatal Elizabeth Shooting, Re-Sentenced After Appeal

Elizabeth

A 29-year-old Jersey City man previously sentenced to 60 years in prison for fatal shooting in Elizabeth, was re-sentenced today after filing an appeal, cutting his sentence to 20 years.

Omar Holmes, who authorities say is a member of the Bloods street gang, was convicted for the April 3, 2006 fatal shooting outside an Elizabeth nightclub on Routes 1&9 that killed William Green, 26, of Newark.

According to judge, the state appeals court panel threw out the murder conviction after the trial judge in 2013, wrongly permitted that the jury hear evidence about Holmes' gang affiliation.

Today, Holmes pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated manslaughter as part of a plea agreement.

Holmes must serve about 17 years of the 20-year term before being eligible for parole.
