Stormy overnight conditions have set us up for a wet start to Thursday across Newark and much of the North Jersey region, but improvements are expected as we move through the day.
Good morning, Jersey! If you’re up with us at 4:30 a.m., you’ll definitely want to grab the umbrella or rain gear before heading out.
Parents getting the kids ready for the bus stop should prepare for a wet morning as well.
The good news is that conditions should improve significantly later today, so the trip home from work and school should be much better than the morning commute.
Some of the heaviest rain is moving through portions of North Jersey early this morning, with scattered showers also developing elsewhere around the state as a front approaches from Pennsylvania.
Once that system clears the region, we’re looking forward to a pretty nice stretch of weather over the next couple of days.
Temperatures are mild this morning, with Somerville and Morristown both around 68 degrees, Sussex County near 60 and Toms River at 72. Here in Newark, we’re waking up to around 70 degrees.
We’ll warm into the mid-80s this afternoon, and some sunshine breaking through the clouds should make for a much brighter second half of the day.
According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms are possible before 11 a.m., followed by partly sunny skies and a high near 86 degrees.
There is another chance for scattered showers or thunderstorms later in the day.
Tonight will remain mostly cloudy, with temperatures falling to around 71 degrees and a chance of showers or thunderstorms mainly before 11 p.m.
So keep that umbrella close for the morning commute, Jersey, but don’t let the early rain fool you — we should see improving conditions as the day moves along.
