Sticky Heat, Thunderstorm Chances Mark Another Sweltering Day in Newark

Newark

By: Richard L. Smith

It’s already near 80 degrees across Newark and North Jersey as residents step out on this steamy morning at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. With thick humidity in the air and temperatures expected to climb into the 90s, the region remains firmly gripped in the latest summer heatwave.

If you’re waiting at the bus stop or catching a train from Newark Penn Station, you’ll immediately feel the moisture in the air, a sign of another sultry day ahead.

According to the National Weather Service, cloud cover will gradually increase throughout the day, setting the stage for potential relief in the form of scattered thunderstorms.

Meteorologists say there’s a 30% chance of showers and storms beginning after 2 p.m., with conditions remaining partly sunny until then. The heat index could climb even higher due to the stifling humidity.

NWS Forecast Details:

Today: A 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Partly sunny, high near 91°F. Southwest wind shifting south at 5 to 10 mph.

Tonight: A chance of showers and thunderstorms continues. Mostly cloudy, low around 73°F.

While the potential rain may bring some momentary relief, health officials still urge residents, especially the elderly and those with underlying conditions, to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activity, and keep cool during peak afternoon hours.

Stay safe and take care of yourself, NJ. Cooler weather is still a few days away.
