Newark and much of North Jersey are waking up to sweltering conditions as a heat advisory takes effect and forecasters warn of severe weather later in the day.
According to the National Weather Service, Tuesday will bring high humidity, rising temperatures, and the potential for strong afternoon and evening thunderstorms.
Good morning, Jersey, it’s already a steamy 78 degrees in downtown Newark, and the heat is only expected to intensify. Temperatures are forecasted to soar to around 94 degrees, with heat index values making it feel closer to 100.
In response, city officials have activated cooling centers to help residents cope with the oppressive conditions.
Early morning patchy fog will give way to increasing clouds, followed by a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. A more organized line of storms is likely after 5 p.m., which could bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds.
The unsettled weather is expected to continue into the night, with a chance of showers and storms lingering until early Wednesday morning. Overnight temperatures will remain warm, with lows around 74 degrees.

Residents are urged to stay cool, hydrated, and weather-aware throughout the day.
