Somerset County officials announced a crime alert to Somerset County residents due to an increase in motor vehicle thefts which occurred over the weekend in the county.

Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson stated that overnight from Friday, October 16, into Saturday, October 17, and on Saturday into the early morning hours on Sunday, October 18, seven motor vehicles were stolen in Somerset County.

Bernards Township Police reported three stolen vehicles, Warren Township Police reported three stolen motor vehicles, and Bernardsville Borough Police reported one stolen motor vehicle.

Prosecutor Robertson stated that car thieves have previously targeted rural areas of Somerset County by specifically looking for unlocked motor vehicles or vehicles where the keys or key fob are left inside or very near the vehicle, with the intent to steal them.

The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office wants to remind all citizens to not leave keys or key fob in vehicles and make sure to lock their vehicles even when the vehicle is in their driveway.

Prosecutor Robertson and Chief Fodor request anyone with information relating to this incident to contact local authorities or the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Burglary Task Force at (908) 231-7100.

Information can also be provided through the Somerset County Crime Stoppers’ Tip Line at 1-888-577-TIPS (8477). All anonymous Crime Stopper tips will be kept confidential.
