Social Media Threat Shuts Down Newark Charter School

Newark

A threat to physically harm students at a charter school in Newark had education officials close the school for the day and police initiate an investigation.

Parents were notified at around 6:30 a.m. by school administrators to keep students home for the day after they found a threat that was made to the student body at the People's Prep Charter School on a social media page according to reports.

In a statement released by the school to RLS Metro Breaking News, officials said the following:

> Upon discovering potentially threatening messages regarding our student body on a social media site, we acted out of an abundance of caution to keep our students at home today. We are working to investigate the matter further, and we are coordinating with the Newark Police Department and Newark Public Schools. We seek to avoid any disruption in student learning, but we feel this will help ensure that our students are safe and that fewer interruptions are going forward.

It is not immediately clear when the threat was found by school offcials.
