Six Apprehended in Weapons, Drug Raids in Essex/Union Counties

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray has announced that detectives from her office's Narcotics and Homicide Task Forces arrested five adults and one juvenile on weapons and narcotics charges Friday afternoon in Newark, NJ. 

Detectives from the Narcotics Task Force, which, in addition to Prosecutor's detectives, includes personnel from the NJ State Police, Bloomfield Police Department and other law enforcement agencies, were in the 800 block of South 19th Street when they observed individuals involved in narcotics activity.

With assistance from detectives from the Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force, the officers moved in and arrested the suspects. In the course of the arrests, detectives seized five firearms and over 150 glassine envelopes of suspected heroin.The firearms have been described as four loaded automatic handguns and one machine gun.

The arrested individuals have been identified as : Andre Davis, age 26, of Newark, who has been charged Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Terroristic Threats, Resisting Arrest and Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon; Rasheen Glaspie, age 23 of Irvington, who has been charged with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of Hollow-Point Bullets, Possession of an Extended Magazine, Resisting Arrest and Possession of a weapon by a Convicted Felon; Shaquan Leaks, age 21, of Hillside, NJ, who has been charged with two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of Hollow Point bullets, Possession of an Extended Magazine, Burglary, Receiving Stolen Property and Resisting Arrest; Keimai Colon, age 20, of Rahway, who has been charged with Possession of Heroin and Resisting Arrest and Wesley McAdams, of Newark, who was charged with Possession of Heroin.

A 16 year old juvenile from Newark was also arrested and charged with Possession of Heroin, Possession of Heroin with Intent to Distribute, Possession of Heroin with Intent to Distribute within 1000 feet of School Property  and resisting Arrest. The investigation is continuing and additional arrests are likely, according Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly.

Acting Prosecutor Murray praised the work of detectives from her office and other participating agencies. "The seizure of five firearms from this residential neighborhood in Newark has likely prevented a great deal of violence," according to Murray, who added that "The collaboration of and partnership between law enforcement agencies is essential to combating crime."

Bail for Davis, Glaspie and Leaks has been set at $100,000 by the Hon. Stephanie Mitterach, J.S.C.  Bail for Colon has been set at $10,000. McAdams was released on his own recognizance and the juvenile was released to a guardian , according to Fennelly. Davis, Glaspie, Leaks and Colon were remanded to the Essex County Correctional Facility pending appearances in the Essex County Central Judicial Processing Court, according to Fennelly. The juvenile's matter will be heard in  the Family Division of Superior Court, according to Fennelly.
