Responding officers taped off a section of the East Ward neighborhood as Essex County Sheriff's officers canvassed the park for potential victims and evidence. While no injuries were reported and no victims were located, authorities did recover shell casings both inside and around the park perimeter. Despite social media claims of a shootout, police have not confirmed whether the incident involved an exchange of gunfire. Officials say the investigation is in its early stages and remains ongoing. The East Ward, and particularly the area around Independence Park, has experienced a notable decline in violent crime, according to recent city data. The park itself has undergone major revitalization efforts, with increased law enforcement patrols and community engagement aimed at keeping the space safe for families and residents. Authorities are working to determine the motive behind the shooting and are seeking information on the suspect responsible for disrupting a community known for its steady progress.At approximately 7:47 p.m., a ShotSpotter device recorded multiple rounds near the Adams and Warwick Street side of the park.
