Shooting on Newark's Central-South Ward Border Leave One Dead

Officials from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office are conducting a homicide investigation after a shooting incident left a person dead on the Newark Central-South Ward border overnight.

According to a preliminary investigation from authorities, at approximately 10:47 p.m., police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out near the intersection of Avon and Peshine avenues.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the severely injured, unconscious and unresponsive victim suffering bullet wounds at that location.

According to police, the victim was rushed to University Hospital, where doctors pronounced the unidentified person dead a short time later.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation and no arrests have been reported.
