Shooting Near Newark's West Side High School Leaves Teen Boy Dead

Newark

Authorities reported fatal injuries for a teenage boy found gunned down near a high school and an elementary charter school in Newark Monday night.

Witnesses said gunfire rang out in front of West Side High School located in the 400 block of South Orange Avenue, sending police to investigate.

Upon arrival, police searched the area and found a severely wounded boy suffering bullet wounds less than a half-block away on Ashland Street.

EMS found the unidentified, unconscious, and unresponsive boy located near Kipp Rise Academy (The old St. Rocco's School).

According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the victim was pronounced dead a short time later. Officials are looking into if the victim was leaving West Side High School's "Light on Program" before the gunman fired rounds in his direction.

Police say it appeared the victim ran the short distance to Ashland before collapsing.

The suspect fled the scene and is at large. Police have not released a motive for the attack.
