Shooting Kills Man in Newark

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating a shooting incident in which three individuals were wounded, one fatally, on Friday afternoon in Newark.

According to authorities, at approximately 4:15 p.m., Newark police officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Astor Street on reports of shots fired.

Arriving officers discovered an unresponsive male, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, lying in the street at this location.

Authorities also discovered that two other males were injured in this incident The unresponsive male was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:12 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

The deceased male has been identified as Jameel Daniels, age 27, of Newark, according to Fennelly.

The other two victims, both Newark residents, were treated at area hospitals for non-life threatening injuries, according to Fennelly.

This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
