Three people were reportedly injured Sunday evening following a serious multi-vehicle crash that forced authorities to close Route 22 westbound in Watchung, Somerset County.

Reports say, firefighters and police responded to the area of 1515 Route 22 shortly before 7:30 p.m. after receiving reports of an overturned vehicle.

Emergency crews arriving at the scene discovered a three-vehicle collision involving a car that had rolled over before coming to rest on its wheels.

The crash scattered debris across the highway, including a vehicle engine, prompting authorities to shut down all westbound lanes and divert traffic onto Mountain Avenue.

Emergency medical personnel reportedly transported three injured individuals by separate ambulances to two area hospitals. Their conditions have not been confirmed.

Somerset County hazardous materials personnel were also called to the scene, while the New Jersey Department of Transportation was requested to assist with traffic control.

Authorities anticipated an extended closure as crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the collision.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and additional details are pending from authorities.
