A serious early-morning crash shut down a portion of Interstate 78 in Union County on Saturday and sent multiple people to the hospital, authorities said.

According to preliminary information, the collision occurred around 1:45 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-78 near mile marker 53.6 in Hillside.
New Jersey State Police troopers responding to the scene encountered a multi-vehicle crash with several individuals reportedly suffering serious injuries.
At least one person was said to have required CPR at the scene, although authorities have not yet confirmed the number of injured or their conditions.
The circumstances surrounding the cause of the crash remain under active investigation by NJ State Police.
A significant portion of the highway was closed off to allow emergency responders to treat the injured and investigators to process the scene.
Delays continued for several hours into the early morning as cleanup crews worked to reopen the roadway.
