Firefighters responded to Great Oaks Legacy Charter School Tuesday afternoon after reports of a lithium-ion battery failure inside a laptop computer, according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda.

Director Miranda said the incident was reported at approximately 2:20 p.m. at the school, located at 909 Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Boulevard.
Fire crews were dispatched to a basement classroom, where they observed smoke but did not find an active fire.
Firefighters conducted a thorough inspection of the classroom and surrounding areas and did not locate any additional hazardous conditions inside the building.
As a precaution, five children and four adults were transported to University Hospital for evaluation related to possible smoke inhalation.
No serious injuries were immediately reported.
No further information was released, and the incident remains under review.
