Serial Burglar Wanted in East Orange Under Arrest in Newark

Newark

Police officials in Newark announced the arrest of an alleged career criminal believed to be responsible for a string of burglaries that plagued the Vailsburg section of the city and neighboring East Orange since December.

According to police, Mr. Robert Thompson, 58, was arrested without incident while under surveillance in the areas he allegedly burglarized.

“This was excellent work by our 6th Precinct detectives,” said Ambrose. “They detected a pattern and arrested the suspect before he could victimize more people.”

Police officials said an image of Thompson captured by a doorbell camera was circulated through the community on flyers and by Newark Department of Public Safety social media outlets, which to information that led to his arrest.

“Once again, it shows the police-public trust and partnership is growing,” Ambrose said.

Police charged Thompson, with four counts each of burglary, theft, criminal mischief and obstruction, also has two burglary-related charges pending in East Orange.

Police say Thompson has a record of 42 arrests and 27 convictions, including 17 felony convictions.

These charges are merely accusations.

This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
