Seperate Overnight Shootings Leaves Four Shot, Two Dead in Newark

A set of overnight night shootings that occurred in separate locations in Newark left four people shots with two (2) of the victims dead during in Newark during the overnight hours.

Detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office were activated to investigate the homicide where gunmen fired shots at males in the city causing the fatal injuries.

In the latest incident, gunfire rang out in the vicinity of South and Broad streets at approximately 2:50 a.m. sending more than a dozen police officers to the scene where they arrived to find two male victims lying on the ground unconscious after bullets struck them multiple times.

EMS rushed both males to University Hospital where doctors immediately rushed one of the victims to the operating room where they worked hard through the early morning hours to treat 'life-threatening' injuries. The second victim is reportedly in stable condition.

**UPDATED 7:11am We received confirmation that one of the victims transitioned. This is now a homicide investigation.**

Police closed off a portion of the area as they searched for additional victims, other evidence and possible suspects.

In an earlier Newark South Ward shooting incident that RLS Metro's weekend crew brought to you, The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has returned a public information request with a confirmation that an Avon Avenue double shooting resulted in one (1) homicide.

According to preliminary reports, the incident happened at around 5:50 p.m. near the Jesse Allen Park where gunmen aimlessly pointed weapons and began firing while children, parents, and others hid behind just about anything for cover.

During the hail of gunfire, two males fell two the ground -suffering multiple gunshot wounds- with one of the victims located about a block away.

The condition of the second victim has only been reported as severe.

Both shooting incidents are under investigation by The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Homicide Task Force.

The overnight shootings bring the total of three (3) murders via of gunfire in Newark since Friday.
